Bush as Fuhrer - The Other Side of Irony - 4th Reich Messages from Homeland Security
Al-Quds * WWIII * Armageddon * Domestic Detention Camps * Brainwashing
of course the people don't want war... but, after all, it is the
leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a
simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a
fascist dictatorship, or a parliament or a communist dictatorship...
voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of
the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are
being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and
exposing the country to danger." -- Hermann Goering
Is US like Germany of the '30s?
By Andrew Greeley - Chicago Sun Times
I can understand, my German friend said, why Germans voted for Hitler in 1933 -- though he did
not receive a majority of the vote. The Weimar Republic was weak and incompetent. The Great Depression
had ruined the nation's war-devastated economy. People were bitter because they thought their leaders
had betrayed them in the war. They wanted revenge for the humiliation of Versailles. Hitler promised
strong leadership and a new beginning. But why did they continue to support that group of crazy drug
addicts, thugs, killers and madmen?
The historical question remains. I leave aside the question of the guilt of the whole German
people (a judgment beyond my competence because I am not God) and ask what explanations might account
for what happened. Hitler turned the German economy around in short order. He was crazy, of course, a
demagogic mystic sensitive to aspirations of the German spirit. He appealed skillfully to the dark side
of the German heritage. Anti-Semitism was strong in Germany, as it was in most European countries, but
not violent until Hitler manipulated it. He stirred up the memories of historic German military
accomplishments and identified himself with Frederick the Great -- thus placating the Prussian ethos of
the German army. He promised glory to a nation still smarting from the disaster of 1918. Germany was
emerging from the ashes, strong and triumphant once again. He also took control of the police
apparatus. The military might have been able to dump him till 1937. After that he was firmly in
power. The path lay open to holocaust.
Can this model be useful to understand how contemporary America is engaged in a criminally unjust war
that has turned much of the world against it, a war in which torture and murder have become routine?
Has the combination of the World Trade Center attack and a president who believes his instructions come
from God unleashed the dark side of the American heritage?
What is this dark side? I would suggest that it is the mix of Calvinist religious righteousness
and "my-country-right-or-wrong" patriotism that dominated our treatment of blacks and American Indians
for most of the country's history. It revealed itself in the American history of imperialism in Mexico
and after the Spanish-American War in the Philippines. The "manifest destiny" of America was to do
whatever it wanted to do, because it was strong and virtuous and chosen by God.
Today many Americans celebrate a "strong" leader who, like Woodrow Wilson, never wavers, never
apologizes, never admits a mistake, never changes his mind, a leader with a firm "Christian" faith in
his own righteousness. These Americans are delighted that he ignores the rest of the world and punishes
the World Trade Center terrorism in Iraq. Mr. Bush is our kind of guy.
He is not another Hitler. Yet there is a certain parallelism. They have in common a demagogic appeal to
the worst side of a country's heritage in a crisis. Bush is doubtless sincere in his vision of what is
best for America. So too was Hitler. The crew around the president -- Donald Rumsfeld, John Ashcroft,
Karl Rove, the "neo-cons" like Paul Wolfowitz -- are not as crazy perhaps as Himmler and Goering and
Goebbels. Yet like them, they are practitioners of the Big Lie -- weapons of mass destruction, Iraq
democracy, only a few "bad apples."
Hitler's war was quantitatively different from the Iraq war, but qualitatively both were foolish,
self-destructive and criminally unjust. This is a time of great peril in American history because a
phony patriotism and an America-worshipping religion threaten the authentic American genius of
tolerance and respect for other people.
The "real" America is still remembered here in Berlin for the enormous contributions of the Marshall
Plan and the Berlin airlift -- America at its best. It is time to return to that generosity and grace.
The strongest criticism that the administration levels at Sen. John Kerry is that he changes his mind.
In fact, instead of a president who claims an infallibility that exceeds that of the pope, America
would be much better off with a president who, like John F. Kennedy, is honest enough to admit
mistakes and secure enough to change his mind.
Ed. note: As promised, Tom Engelhardt delivers a
Modern Day Nazi Picnic, after up 'til now being very cautious in
venturing about in this real obvious area of socio-political reality.
Tom wrote, "The 'Nazi analogy' is
making its slow way into the critical mainstream. Of course, since at least 9/11 this analogy has been
alive and well at the wilder fringes of the Internet. (There, people have long been asking: Are we
already in the Nazi era, or are we at the desperate end of the Weimar Republic? Were the attacks of
9/11 another Reichstag burning?)" and "Now, variations on this Nazi analogy are suddenly thriving --
and not in obscure political websites either. (I've always avoided the analogy myself because it's such
a minefield and tends to send everyone flying in strange and unfruitful directions.)"

Gen. Franks Doubts Constitution Will Survive WMD Attack
By JOHN O. EDWARDS - NewsMax.com
Gen. Tommy Franks says that if the United States is hit with a weapon of mass destruction that
inflicts large casualties, the Constitution will likely be discarded in favor of a military form
Franks, who successfully led the U.S. military operation to liberate Iraq, expressed his worries
in an extensive interview he gave to the menıs lifestyle magazine Cigar Aficionado.
In the magazine's December edition, the former commander of the military's Central Command warned that
if terrorists succeeded in using a weapon of mass destruction (WMD) against the U.S. or one of our
allies, it would likely have catastrophic consequences for our cherished republican form of government.
Discussing the hypothetical dangers posed to the U.S. in the wake of Sept. 11, Franks said that "the
worst thing that could happen" is if terrorists acquire and then use a biological, chemical or nuclear
weapon that inflicts heavy casualties.
If that happens, Franks said, "... the Western world, the free world, loses what it cherishes most, and
that is freedom and liberty we've seen for a couple of hundred years in this grand experiment that we
Franks then offered "in a practical sense" what he thinks would happen in the aftermath of such an
"It means the potential of a weapon of mass destruction and a terrorist, massive, casualty-producing
event somewhere in the Western world - it may be in the United States of America - that causes our
population to question our own Constitution and to begin to militarize our country in order to avoid a
repeat of another mass, casualty-producing event. Which in fact, then begins to unravel the fabric of
our Constitution. Two steps, very, very important."
Franks didn't speculate about how soon such an event might take place.
Already, critics of the U.S. Patriot Act, rushed through Congress in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks,
have argued that the law aims to curtail civil liberties and sets a dangerous precedent.
But Franks' scenario goes much further. He is the first high-ranking official to openly speculate that
the Constitution could be scrapped in favor of a military form of government.
The usually camera-shy Franks retired from U.S. Central Command, known in Pentagon lingo as CentCom, in
August 2003, after serving nearly four decades in the Army.
Franks earned three Purple Hearts for combat wounds and three Bronze Stars for valor. Known as
a "soldierıs general," Franks made his mark as a top commander during the U.S.'s successful Operation
Desert Storm, which liberated Kuwait in 1991. He was in charge of CentCom when Osama bin Laden's
al-Qaeda attacked the United States on Sept. 11.
Franks said that within hours of the attacks, he was given orders to prepare to root out the Taliban in
Afghanistan and to capture bin Laden.
Franks offered his assessment on a number of topics to Cigar Aficionado, including:
President Bush: "As I look at President Bush, I think he will ultimately be judged as a man of
extremely high character. A very thoughtful man, not having been appraised properly by those who would
say he's not very smart. I find the contrary. I think he's very, very bright. And I suspect that he'll
be judged as a man who led this country through a crease in history effectively. Probably we'll think
of him in years to come as an American hero."
On the motivation for the Iraq war: Contrary to claims that top Pentagon brass opposed the invasion of
Iraq, Franks said he wholeheartedly agreed with the president's decision to invade Iraq and oust
"I, for one, begin with intent... There is no question that Saddam Hussein had intent to do harm to
the Western alliance and to the United States of America. That intent is confirmed in a great many of
his speeches, his commentary, the words that have come out of the Iraqi regime over the last dozen or
so years. So we have intent.
"If we know for sure... that a regime has intent to do harm to this country, and if we have something
beyond a reasonable doubt that this particular regime may have the wherewithal with which to execute
the intent, what are our actions and orders as leaders in this country?"
The Pentagon's deck of cards: Asked how the Pentagon decided to put its most-wanted Iraqis on a set
of playing cards, Franks explained its genesis. He recalled that when his staff identified the most
notorious Iraqis the U.S. wanted to capture, "it just turned out that the number happened to be about
the same as a deck of cards. And so somebody said, 'Aha, this will be the ace of spades.'"
Capturing Saddam: Franks said he was not surprised that Saddam has not been captured or killed. But he
says he will eventually be found, perhaps sooner than Osama bin laden.
"The capture or killing of Saddam Hussein will be a near term thing. And I won't say that'll be
within 19 or 43 days... I believe it is inevitable."
Franks ended his interview with a less-than-optimistic note. "It's not in the history of
civilization for peace ever to reign. Never has in the history of man. I doubt that we'll ever
have a time when the world will actually be at peace." [MORE]
The U.S. military's code name for a crackdown on resistance in Iraq was also used by the
Nazis for an aborted operation to damage the Soviet power grid during World War Two.
"Operation Iron Hammer" this week launched the 1st Armored Division's 3rd Brigade into the roughest
parts of Baghdad to ferret out the attackers who have killed scores of U.S. troops since Iraqi leader
Saddam Hussein was ousted in April.
A Pentagon official said the name was chosen because of the "Old Ironsides" nickname of the 1st
Armored Division. He was unaware of any connection to any Nazi operation.
"Eisenhammer," the German for "iron hammer," was a Luftwaffe code name for a plan to destroy Soviet
generating plants in the Moscow and Gorky areas in 1943, according to Universal Lexikon on
the www.infobitte.de Web site.
A researcher at Britain's Imperial War Museum confirmed the existence of Eisenhammer.
The Nazi's long-range bombing operation was repeatedly postponed and was finally scrapped after an
allied air assault destroyed many of the German planes on the ground in 1945, shortly before the
defeat of Germany.
After it declared war on terrorism, U.S. officials changed the code name for its impending attack on
Afghanistan to Operation Enduring Freedom.
The original name, Operation Infinite Justice, was jettisoned amid fears that the Muslim world,
already leery of U.S. intentions, would object on the basis of Koranic teachings that only God can
provide infinite justice. [MORE]
The 14 Characteristics of Fascism
by Dr. Lawrence Britt
Dr. Lawrence Britt, a political scientist, wrote an article about fascism which appeared in Free
Inquiry magazine - a journal of humanist thought. Dr. Britt studied the fascist regimes of Hitler
(Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile). He found
the regimes all had 14 things in common, and he calls these the identifying characteristics of
fascism. The article is titled 'Fascism Anyone?', by Lawrence Britt, and appears in the Free Inquiry Spring 2003 issue on page 20.
The 14 characteristics are:
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make
constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symb ols, songs, and other
paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on
clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of
enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are
persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of
"need". The people tend to 'look the other way' or even approve of
torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The
people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to
eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious
minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of
government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and
military service are glamorized.
5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be
almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional
gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is
homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes the media is directly
controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is
indirectly controlled by government regulation, or through sympathetic
media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in wartime,
is very common.
7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist
nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to
manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common
from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are
diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business
aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the
government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial
business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of
labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are
either eliminated entirely or are severely suppressed.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend
to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and
academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be
censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly
attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes,
the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people
are often willing to overlook police abuses, and even forego civil
liberties, in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police
force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always
are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other
to government positions, and who use governmental power and authority
to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in
fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be
appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations
are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear
campaigns against (or even the assassination of) opposition candidates,
the use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district
boundaries, and the manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also
typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections. [MORE]

This article which may be seen in its entirety and in its unedited form was originally titled TALKING TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT FASCISM and
discussed the history of fascism, starting with Germany, Italy and
Japan having adopted some variations of fascism by the 1930s until up
to the end of World War II. After the war there was ongoing fascism in
Spain, Portugal, Greece, Hungary and elsewhere.

the victors who effectively erased the Soviet Union led by
Marxist/Communists as the driving force in stopping the fascist rampage
of Benito Mussolini and Adolph Hitler.
It is obvious that neither the ordinary American or the British can
expect anything more from their respective governments than the
ordinary German people got from the Nazi regime, or the citizens of the
U.S.S.R. got from the Stalinists who assassinated Leon Trotsky and then used the Cold War as an excuse to steal the Bolshevik Revolution away from the people of the Soviet Union and the workers of the world. Also see: Ten Days That Shook the World by John Reed.
For the purpose of bolstering governments, their respective military

01NOV2002 Is America Becoming a Fascist State?
- Anis Shivani
Since mainstream left-liberal media do not seriously ask this question,
the analysis of what has gone wrong and where we are heading has been
mostly off-base. Investigation of the kinds of under-handed, criminal
tactics fascist regimes undertake to legitimize their agenda and
accelerate the rate of change in their favor is dismissed as indulging
in "conspiracy theory." Liberals insist that this regime must be
treated under the rules of "politics as usual." But this doesn't
consider that one election has already been stolen, and that
September's repeat of irregularities in Florida was a clear warning
that more such thuggery is on the way. If the "f" word is uttered,
liberals are quick to note certain obvious dissimilarities with
previous variants of fascism and say that what is happening in America
is not fascist. It took German justice minister Herta Daeubler-Gmelin
to make the comparison explicit (under present American rules of
political discourse, she has been duly sacked from her cabinet post);
but at the liberal New York Times or The Nation, American writers dare
not speak the truth.
The blinkered assertion that we are immune to the virus ignores
degrees of convergence and distinction based on the individual
patient's history. The Times and other liberal voices have been
obsessed over the last year with the rise of minority fascist parties
in the Netherlands, France, and other European countries. They have
questioned the tastefulness of new books and movies about Hitler, and
again demonized such icons of Nazism as Leni Riefenstahl. Is this
perhaps a displacement of American anxiety onto the safer European
scene, liberal intellectuals here not wanting to confront the troubling
truth? The pace of events in the last year has been almost as
blindingly fast as it was after Hitler's Machtergreifung and the
consolidation of fascist power in 1933. Speed stuns and silences.
Max Frankel, former editor of the Times, quotes from biographer
Joachim Fest in his review of Speer: The Final Verdict: " . . .how
easily, given appropriate conditions, people will allow themselves to
be mobilized into violence, abandoning the humanitarian traditions they
have built up over centuries to protect themselves from each other,"
and that a "primal being" such as Hitler "will always crop up again."
Is Frankel really redirecting his anxiety about the primal being that
has arisen in America? When Frankel says that "Speer far more than
Hitler [because the former came from a culturally refined background]
makes us realize how fragile these precautions are, and how the ground
on which we all stand is always threatened," is this an oblique
reference to the ground shifting from under us?
The proposed Iraqi adventure, which is only the first step in a
more ambitious militarist agenda, has been opposed by the most
conservative warmongers of past administrations. If the test of any
theory is its predictive capacity, Bush's extreme risk-taking is better
explained by the fascist model. Purely economic motives are a large
part of the story, but there is a deeper derivation that exceeds such
mundane rationales. Several of the apparent contradictions in Bush's
governance make perfect sense if the fascist prism is applied, but not
with the normal perspective.
To pose the question doesn't mean that this is a completed project;
at any point, anything can happen to shift the course of history in a
different direction. Yet after repeated and open corruption of the
normal electoral process, several declarations of world war (including
in three major addresses, and now the National Security Strategy
document), adventurous and unprecedented military doctrines, suspension
of much of the Bill of Rights, and clear signals that a declaration of
emergency to crush remaining dissent is on the way, surely it is time
to analyze the situation differently.
Absent that perspicacity, false diagnoses and prescriptions will
continue. It is fine to be concerned about tyrannous Muslim regimes,
and surely they need to set their own house in order, but not now, not
in this context, and not under the auspices of the American fascist
regime. Liberals don't yet realize, or fail to admit, that they may
have been condemned to irrelevance for quite some time; the death blow
against even mild welfare statism might already have been struck.
The similarities between American fascism and particularly the
National Socialist precedent, both historical and theoretical, are
remarkable. Fascism is home, it is here to stay, and it better be
countered with all the intellectual resources at our disposal. [MORE]

-- The Bhagavad-Gita
People whose lives are rooted in the sacred stories must always act as
responsible peace advocates, ready to resist the misuse of military
power and ready to help national leaders address the deeper sources of
war and aggression. Our primary religious understanding holds that a
moral society must never become the evil it deplores as it attempts to
bring to justice those it regards as the instruments of evil.
Christian and Muslim, Hindu and Jew, Buddhist and Shinto, Baha'i
and Sikh--all our faith traditions celebrate the sacredness of human
life. All charge us to build a just, peaceful, and equitable world. In
their essence all these traditions celebrate the power of love to
vanquish hate and the power of mercy to overcome vengeance.
Therefore, in the name of God, the Ultimate, we say "No" to war against Iraq. [MORE]

institutions. And that's why I was so surprised to see, that the guy I

United States, along with those of its coalition partners, find
themselves in battle with an amorphous opponent in a global
counter-insurgency campaign managed by paranoid policy makers who see
themselves as the enlightened sons of God. As the illegitimate and

Taliban and Al Qaeda (the Visigoths and Huns?)-in a war that may well
see the use of nuclear weapons, the American Empire seems doomed to
duplicate the concluding events of 476 A.D. And it's not Al Qaeda's

government that will sacrifice the future of the world's greatest
experiment in freedom on the altar of fascism. [MORE]
